Neodymium Magnet Alternator, Alternator Magnet
A permanent magnet alternator (also called PMA, permanent magnet generator, PMG or magneto) relies on the magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet to convert mechanical energy into electrical power. It can generate AC current, with which it can power the whole engine and charge the battery. Compare to a regular field-wound alternator, a PMA has several advantages defined as follows:
- A PMA does not need a battery to generate power. This is important if you are generating in a remote area with no auto parts stores nearby.
- Compared to DC motor, a PMA has no brushes to wear out, thus eliminates the maintenance work and cost.
- A PMA does not require any power supply to start generating, while a regular field-wound alternator requires 40W to energize the field.
