Samarium Cobalt Rod Magnet Description

Samarium cobalt rod magnets are also known as samarium cobalt cylinder magnets. They have straight parallel sides and a circular cross-section, and are measured according to the Diameter (D) x Height (H).  SmCo is a widely used second-generation high-energy material. Using Samarium and cobalt as its rare earth element, it exhibits high magnetic performance characteristics in energy products and coercive force. There are two compositions of magnets in this family: Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17. The highest commercially available energy products of Sm2Co17 are in the 30MGOe range.

Magnetization directions: by Axial or by radial.

Samarium Cobalt Rod Magnet Application

SmCo rod magnets are widely used in sensors, speakers, reed switches, motors, rotors, wind turbines/generators, AC/DC motors, drive motors, servo motors, etc.

Stanford Magnets specializes in manufacturing and supplying SmCo rod magnets applied in various industrial applications. We have advanced technology, rich experience, and professional engineering technicians in this field. If you require a specific size, please contact us for a custom SmCo magnet quote.

FAQ

What are SmCo rod magnets?
SmCo rod magnets are cylindrical magnets made from an alloy of samarium and cobalt, belonging to the rare-earth magnet category. They are known for their high magnetic strength, excellent temperature stability, and corrosion resistance.
How do SmCo rod magnets compare to Neodymium magnets?
SmCo rod magnets offer superior temperature resistance (up to 300°C or 572°F) and better corrosion resistance without the need for protective coatings. Neodymium magnets typically provide higher magnetic strength at room temperature but are more susceptible to corrosion and lose magnetic properties at lower temperatures compared to SmCo magnets.
What are the main applications for SmCo rod magnets?
Their high temperature and corrosion resistance make them ideal for aerospace, automotive sensors, medical devices, industrial applications requiring operation in extreme environments, and any application where stability over a wide temperature range is crucial.
Can SmCo rod magnets operate in high-temperature environments?
Yes, one of the key advantages of SmCo rod magnets is their ability to maintain magnetic performance at temperatures up to 300°C (572°F), making them suitable for high-temperature applications.
Do SmCo rod magnets require any special handling?
While SmCo rod magnets are robust in terms of temperature and corrosion, they are brittle and can chip or break if mishandled. It is important to handle them carefully to avoid impact or pressure that could cause damage.
Are SmCo rod magnets corrosion-resistant?
Yes, SmCo magnets have excellent corrosion resistance and generally do not require any protective coating, making them suitable for use in harsh or corrosive environments.
How are SmCo rod magnets manufactured?
The manufacturing process involves melting the alloy materials, casting, pulverizing into a fine powder, pressing in a magnetic field, sintering, machining to the desired rod shape, and then magnetizing the finished magnet.
What sizes and grades are available for SmCo rod magnets?
SmCo rod magnets are available in a wide range of sizes and magnetic grades to suit different applications. The size can be customized based on the requirements, and the magnetic strength varies according to the specific SmCo alloy grade used.
Can the magnetic orientation of SmCo rod magnets be customized?
Yes, the magnetic orientation of SmCo rod magnets can be customized during the manufacturing process to suit specific application needs, including axial, diametrical, or radial orientation, depending on the magnet's intended use.
How do I choose the right SmCo rod magnet for my application?
Consider the application's specific requirements, including the required magnetic strength, operating temperature range, environmental conditions, and physical size constraints. SmCo rod magnets are particularly suitable for applications that require stable magnetic performance in high-temperature or corrosive environments. Consulting with a magnet manufacturer can help in selecting the appropriate magnet grade and size for your application.
