The coupler consists of a light source and a light receiver. The light source and receiver are assembled in a sealed housing, and are separated from each other by transparent insulators. The pin of the light source is the input end, the pin of the receiver is the output end, the common light source is the light emitting diode, the receiver is the photosensitive diode, the photosensitive triode and so on. The function of the coupler is to realize optical signal shunting/combining, or to extend the optical fiber link. It belongs to the field of optical passive components, and can be applied in the telecommunication network, cable television network, user loop system, and regional network.
The main application occasions of linear couplers
(1) Application in Logic Circuit
Couplers can form various logic circuits. Because the anti-interference performance and isolation performance of couplers are better than transistors, the logic circuits composed of couplers are more reliable.
(2) Application as a solid state switch
In the switching circuit, it is often required to have good electrical isolation between the control circuit and the switch. It is difficult for the general electronic switch to achieve, but it is easy to achieve with the coupler.
(3) Application in Trigger Circuit
Using coupler in a bistable output circuit can effectively solve the problem of isolation between output and load because light emitting diodes can be connected into two emitter circuits separately.

The coupler is used in the digital circuit to amplify the pulse signal.
(5) Application of Linear Circuit
Linear couplers are used in linear circuits with high linearity and excellent geoelectric isolation performance.

Couplers can also be used in high voltage control, replace transformers and contact relays, and for A/D circuits and other occasions.
