An Introduction to Neodymium Magnet

Neodymium Magnet, also known as Neo magnet, is a type of rare-earth magnets made from an alloy containing, most common, the chemical elements Neodymium, Iron and Boron (NdFeB or Neo magnet for short). The Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet is the strongest type of commercial magnet and is available in a wide range of shapes, sizes and grades. Protective coatings are applied to Neo magnets and the most common one is electroless nickel plating (Ni-Cu-Ni; an effective triple coating). The NdFeB magnet is anisotropic sintered magnet – the Neodymium-Iron-Boron alloy is jet milled into fine powder and is then pressed in a magnetic field to obtain a preferred magnetization direction (making it anisotropic in performance). The pressed working piece is then heat treated in a sintering furnace before final machining and magnetism inspection. The NdFeB magnet was developed just over 25 years ago and was first commercially available in 1984. It was initially developed for voice coil motors in computer hard disk drives, which currently still account for over 50% of whole Neodymium magnets production. The NdFeB magnet is also applied in other devices including high performance motor, brushless DC motor, magnetic separation, magnetic resonance imaging, generator, sensor and loudspeaker, etc., which are becoming increasingly popular across a wide range of novelty products such as fridge magnets and all kinds of magnetically attachable gadgets for retail markets.
